I am writing this from ER room #10 at UCH, the same room Mom was in about a week-and-a-half ago. Dad’s gone for a walk and Jill’s gone to get dinner, so I thought I’d share some thoughts I had earlier.
Once we were wheeled into the room and situated, vitals taken and intstructions given to [...]

(Written a few days before her seizure)
Mom’s flossing her teeth again. I swear she must own stock in Crest. We just had a nice talk about August and mom’s initial surgery. Actually, it was mostly me reading old journal entries I had written back when she was in the hospital. She listened intently as I [...]

The conversation started innocently enough: just another discussion about cocaine and whether there’s such a thing as an addictive personality. How we stumbled on the broader discussion of how one acquires a “personality” is a bit puzzling, but then again, puzzling conversations with weird segues are standard for the Lawlers. Take last night, for instance. [...]

(Written pre-seizure)
Call it the steroids or perhaps frustration from being physically manipulated 24 hours a day, but mom’s been pretty hard on herself lately. For every “you’re doing really well” there’s a “like hell I am” or “bullshit” or “no I’m not.” Though it’s hard to hear her berate herself, she typically moves faster after [...]

Since the seizure, Mom still has difficulty with the left side but it resembles more the conditions before seizure than after. The one difference is that she can no longer shuffle her feet—only inches on a good day; she still converses in short sentences and yes’s and no’s (which is an improvement to nothing at [...]

(Wow, a lot can happen in a weekend. I wrote this several days ago but
time ran away from me. Future posts will tell why….)
Behold, the rest of the story…
…I stood to her right as I soaped and rinsed her hands; she seemed
distracted as I washed them. In the midst of splashing water on her hands,
I [...]

I’m staring at mom as I type. She’s sleeping in one of Brelle’s nice lounge chairs, not five feet away. I don’t feel comfortable taking my eyes off her these days, especially after yesterday. In fact, this is her first time to be home since about 12:30 yesterday afternoon, when she left for her 1:00 [...]

Yes, I am still here :)) Writing has become a SMIDGE redundant lately, seein’ as my two sidekicks sometimes post two or three times a day. So, I sits and I waits for little morsels of comedy or tragedy to save for my posts; just so I can say to the sisters…face, runts, face! (Lawler’s ain’t [...]

I’m typing as mom watches the Price is Right. She’s sipping a cup of decaf and waiting for Erin to arrive for our morning/afternoon transport to Craig. I’ve been meaning to write for the past six days but haven’t found the time. Since arriving in Denver, it’s been non-stop fiddling. We’ve etched out the slightest [...]

Yesterday, when Jill, Diane and I were helping our Mom into the car, Diane referred to Mom’s defiant left hand as “Leroy”. Wherever there’s opportunity for song, we’ll find it and fill the space with our (somewhat less than harmonic, but always full of fun) voices. I launched into “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”, changing the [...]
